On July 9-10, 1998, nearly 200 former missionaries to the Enga people in the mountains of Papua New Guinea (PNG) gathered in St. Louis to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the beginnings of the Lutheran mission in PNG in 1948. Simultaneously, former Lutheran missionaries from Australia gathered in Adelaide, South Australia and connected with their friends from the USA via phone. The two articles linked below tell the story. The first one, written by missionary Rev. Dr. Robert Holst, originally appeared in the Lutheran Witness shortly after the gathering and tells the story of the St. Louis event, which became the stimulus meeting for the formation of the Papua New Guinea Mission Society. The second article, written by pioneer missionary Ian Kleinig, relates the story of the simultaneous Australian celebration. The pictures which follow illustrate the story and the missionaries involved.
